What have I gotten myself into?
Wait! Hold on… literally cold open. starving girl in the woods. Bow, three measly arrows. Family leaving her on read. Lowkey Dollartree Katniss Everdeen out here trying to decide if she’s gonna kill a deer, pony-wolf or suffer an untimely death? As if being a starving artist wasn’t already a poorly chosen career path. Now Feyre is dealing with possible shape shifting Faeries. At least the snow was pretty… pretty and deadly.
In the middle of it all tho, poor Isaac Hale how are we just gonna drop emotionally empty rampant dirty barn hookups in the middle of I’m starving, my family sucks, dad’s a cripple, we used to be rich, that giant wolf couldn’t possibly be a faerie, gosh the snow is beautiful, I’m gangly… her thought process is wild. I have questions. Several of them are probably none of my business, but I have them.
The second arrow thru the eye “Just in case” giiiiiiirrrrrl you just totally slaughtered a faerie that was shifted to be a wolf and you justified it cause you saw he looked at you funny? “Good riddance” indeed. You know what “just a wolf, despite his size” sounds like? Sounds like somebody is gonna catch hands in a future chapter.
Sure, Fey. Deffo just a wolf. Keep saying it until the pony-sized body starts looking normal.
Family Matters
Wait wait hold the heck up…. So our leading lady is just non-chalantly dragging a deer carcass thru the snow back to her place? Boy how the times have changed!
Welcome to house Archeron home to the most ungrateful bunch of SOB’s this side of the continent. Not one “are you hurt”, “holy shit, is that a wolf pelt?”, just can you hurry up and clean that bloody mess I’m staaaaarrrving! Acting like Feyre is medieval Doordash and you cheapskates don’t tip worth a shit. Zero stars.
Ya girl Fey, I’m calling her Fey now BTW. (Deal with it!) Obviously the runt of the litter. Is basically in a Cinderella situation. Each older sister doesn’t do shit, and dear father is really into just watching the fire and being the best cripple a cripple can be. But through it all Fey channels all this rage into you guessed it. Painting… Painting little flowers and vines all over the walls and furniture of their meek home. Oddly giving each sister distinctive elements that I’m sure are foreshadowing something to come. Authors are anything if not predictable…
So, the artist from chapter one made it home, butchered her kill, and dealt with the slings and arrows from and ungrateful family. Shit, she doesn’t even have white paint. Girl cant even catch a break. Her own father chalks it all up to “luck”. What a guy… Nesta throws insults and dodges work like its the draft and Elaine. Sweet innocent Elaine. Seems like she is just happy to be around. Reminds me of that Tom Petty song… “She’s a good girl… loves her daddy… loves the Mother and Prythian too…” The equivalent of a wet mop.
Speaking of useless, Nesta if you’re into mean spirited people who just “happen to leave their crippled fathers cane slightly out of reach” then boy do I have a sister for you. Not only is she mean, doesn’t do shit. But she actively torments her family. Guess those flames might match a tramp stamp on her back? Even with all her hostility she’s apparently found a suitor from town. I hope he enjoys being told what to do. But not before reminding Fey about that barnyard boy-toy Isaac. Classic sisterly banter… “We don’t need your poor boyfriend eating what little food we have NESTA!”, “Well.. AT LEAST I’m not getting tossed like a bale of hay in the barn every other day by some town degen named ISAAC!”
Ever the timing expert dad throws down possibly THE worst line with “We need hope as much as we need bread and meat.” We do? Can we eat hope? Can we sell hope at the market for food and goods? Bad credit but have hope? No problem we’ll sell you this wagon! Like hell you would.
